Barring some happy misadventure, Donald Trump will be the Republican party’s candidate in this November’s presidential nomination. This grisly probability has been apparent for many months but time has made it no more respectable. The partisan realities of American politics then dictate that Trump has at least something like a 45 percent chance of returning to the White House to serve the most improbable - and most depressing - second-term in the Republic’s history.
