As was wonderfully pointed out in the recent Uncommon Knowledge podcast, for these secular times the question is no longer ‘What would Jesus do?’ but do the opposite of whatever Hitler did. Snyder readily compared Trump to Hitler and has made similarly risible claims about Brexit. A leading candidate- in an overcrowded field - for the paranoid style of modern academia.

I hope you are right, Alex. But the United States' position as the indispensable nation has taken a bit of a beating of late. And that beating continues, albeit in a lower profile way, under the Biden administration. Consider, for example, the startlingly contemptuous remarks of USTR Tai following the WTO's recent ruling that the Trump Administration's steel and aluminium tariffs broke WTO rules. The damage that the US continues to do to the global rule of law, largely its own creation, will take years to repair. In the interim, the world will remain a more dangerous place, both within and across borders.

This was terrific once again Alex, I have long felt that if you compare today to the 60s then a lot of our panic is overblown but also you see things like Jan 6 and that inspiring a copycat thing in Brazil coupled of course with Putins war in Ukraine and it starts to become difficult in words at least to point out that things are not as bad or dangerous as the online hysterics like to make out but also recognise real risks do exist and it would be wise not to be complacent, finding the balance is tough

Are you sure that the febrile folk are mostly Republicans? For example, the summer of 'mostly peaceful protests' seemed to be Democrats going completely insane.
